Asia Relief under the patronage of the Embassy of Indonesia hosted its first Evening of Remembrance on February 17th at the J.W. Marriott in Washington D.C.
Preceding the banquet was a reception featuring a silent auction and displays representing the experience of different countries with disaster. The program commenced with the procession of Sri Lankan Kandyan drummers. Their performance was followed by additional entertainment from Vishal Vaid, Indonesian instrumentalists and Walter Johnson High School's Jazz Ensemble and Strolling Stringers.
Master of Ceremonies Preacher Moss provided comic relief throughout the evening. The Ambassadors representing Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan addressed the audience regarding their countries' disaster recovery experience. Bishop Jane Holmes Dixon gave an American experience of coming together in the aftermath of disaster and working with diverse communities towards shared goals. A brief film illustrated the Asia Relief response to disasters and was followed by remarks from Asia Relief President Rizwan Mowlana.
The event was a tremendous success for Asia Relief. Many thanks to the exceptional support from our sponsors, attendees, volunteers and performers. |
