Practical Intervention
Asia Relief is building partnerships with committed educators and social workers based in Indonesia to create holistic centers to address the special needs of street children.

Alternatives
Providing education is not enough when going to school means giving up the income from scavenging and begging that these children live off of.  Centers must offer avenues for children to replace their income so that going to school does not compete with basic survival.  Vocational development is also important so that as adults they will have alternatives to begging and crime.

Safety
Street Children are particularly vulnerable to predators and are at risk for child trafficking, forced labor and criminal exploitation.  Centers can play a role in documenting, monitoring and protecting these children.

Understanding
These children are regularly subjected to abuse and degrading treatment by society.  Asia Relief centers will provide psycho-social training to teachers and center staff to help them work with the unique needs of these children.

Little DreamsSri Lanka

Those who have lost everything in natural or man-made disasters do not desire a dependence on charity. Rather, they want to regain their ability to provide for themselves. For many poor people, self-sufficiency is a dream that they have the ambition but not the resources to achieve. Asia Relief's "Little Dreams" program provides small business grants to help those in need achieve self-sufficiency.

Case Study 1:Khanthi's Shop
Khanthi resides along the southern coast of
Sri Lanka and survived the 2004 tsunami by hanging onto a telephone wire. She suffered a broken leg and multiple injuries along with loosing her market stand. Asia Relief met up with her and her family of twelve, and learned that she had a dream of owning her own small grocery. Asia Relief viewed her dream not just as an opportunity to help Khanthi and her family, but also as a means of energizing the community and expanding the local economy. Within three weeks, work was completed on Kanthi's small grocery. Since then other stores have been put up next to Khanti's, creating a new economic center for the village.

Case Study 2:The Fishermen of Eravur
Left without any income after losing their boats and nets in the 2004 tsunami, fishermen from the
village of Eravur, along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, applied to Asia Relief for ten new lagoon-fishing canoes. After receiving the canoes these village fishermen can be found out on the water in the early morning and provide fresh fish to the markets every day.

Housing Sri Lanka

Asia Relief’s Putuville Housing Initiative

Asia Relief is currently engaged in developing and implementing a significant housing project designed to provide permanent shelter for members of Sri Lanka’s growing IDP population.
Recipients will be selected from the following groups:

·          People who have been displaced due to the conflict in the region, including those who were forced from their homes by the recent outbreak of violence.

·          Those who were displaced by the Tsunami and who still have not been provided with adequate shelter.

Asia relief proposes to build a housing complex consisting of 100 houses. This housing will provide homes for approximately 700-800 people who are currently displaced.

Asia Relief’s office in Sri Lanka will undertake the project to build these 100 houses on private land. An estimated amount of US $811,500 is needed to successfully execute the construction of these 100 houses. 18-24 months will be required to complete the project, from the start date of construction.

This housing project will be a significant contribution towards the global efforts to provide permanent shelter for displaced in Sri Lanka

Asia Relief is committed to seeing this project to completion.
